Why your ecommerce plugin strategy matters this summer

Summer is a peak trading window for merchants. For those running ecommerce stores on plugin-based platforms, it’s a test of whether their payment infrastructure is ready for changes in how, where, and when customers shop and buy.

The season brings a distinct trading pattern: mobile browsing increases and cross-border purchasing picks up as more customers travel, while buying windows become shorter. As a result, merchants who treat their ecommerce plugin stack as a non-priority risk losing revenue at key conversion points.

Mobile checkout is where revenue is won or lost

Cart abandonment sits at over 70% globally, and on mobile — the dominant device during summer — that figure rises to 80.2%. Around 39% of shoppers leave when extra costs appear late in the checkout, while another 24% abandon when forced to create an account.

For plugin-based stores on Shopify, WooCommerce, or Prestashop, data shows that reducing this friction through checkout improvements alone can lift conversion by up to 35%.

That figure matters more in summer, as seasonal categories like travel accessories, outdoor equipment or event-related purchases operate within tighter buying windows. For merchants, it means a checkout that loads slowly on mobile or introduces unnecessary steps loses the sale.

Authorisation rates and false declines drain margins

Authorisation rates compound the issue. Ecommerce authorisation decline rates reach as high as 17% in some sectors, and for subscription merchants, 15% of recurring card payments fail.

During summer, when cross-border transactions increase and card issuers are subject to varying risk thresholds in different countries, unmonitored authorisation performance becomes a direct revenue leak. Network tokenisation offers a solution for merchants. Visa data shows a 4.6 percentage point increase in authorisation rates for tokenised card-not-present transactions compared with PAN-based processing.

There is also a less visible cost. Data found that false declines (legitimate transactions blocked by fraud rules) cost merchants an estimated $213 billion globally. Experian research found that 16% of ecommerce sales are unnecessarily rejected, with 70% of flagged transactions turning out to be legitimate. During peak trading windows, false declines equate to lost sales and lost repeat buyers.

Payment method mix affects conversion

Payment method coverage is the third area that directly affects summer conversion. Research shows 6% of consumers abandon checkout if their preferred payment method is missing, with 9% refusing to complete an order when their payment options feel too limited.

For merchants selling to international audiences such as tourists, travellers or cross-border shoppers during the summer, offering the dominant local payment method improves conversions: payabl.’s Fraud in Europe report found 53% of European consumers were willing to switch to new payment methods for a faster or more convenient checkout, while merchants reported 12% revenue and 7.4% conversion increases after integrating at least one alternative payment method in 2025.

Prepare before the window opens

Summer is a finite trading window. Auditing your checkout before the season begins puts you in a stronger position when traffic increases. Test mobile flows on real devices, review authorisation rates, check fraud rules against actual chargeback data and confirm your payment method mix reflects performing markets.
