A first venture into risk underwriting: Maya's internship at payabl.

Maya Chaaban joined payabl. as a Risk Underwriting Intern while in her final year studying management of information systems at the University of Nicosia. It's her first real experience working inside a company, and she chose risk underwriting for good reason. "I was always curious about the risk underwriting position at payabl." she says.

Setting goals for the internship

Maya came into the internship with clear targets: learn new systems, build her skills in monitoring and onboarding, and understand how to work well as part of a team. "I hope to learn how to work in a team, to collaborate, and how it actually goes in a professional working environment," she says.

She's realistic about the learning curve ahead, too. Her biggest expected challenge is minimizing mistakes while she gets up to speed, though she sees that as part of the process rather than a setback.

“My biggest challenge will be trying ,as much as possible, not to make mistakes. But I know that these are part of the learning process. Hopefully, with time, I’ll learn everything and be able to perform the tasks correctly," she says.

First impressions match what she expected

Before starting, Maya had already formed a picture of payabl. through the company website and LinkedIn activity. "It looks like such a nice working environment," she says. That impression held up once she started. "Everyone was very kind and helpful, which is amazing for the first time working."

She points to the pace of new information as a highlight of her internship at payabl. "I'm learning a lot of new stuff, which is amazing for me," she exclaimed.

Looking ahead with confidence

Maya expects to finish the internship more confident in the tasks she's learning, with risk underwriting giving her a practical grounding for the systems and processes she'll carry into her career.

She rounded out her time by saying: “at the end of the internship, I see myself more confident, especially while performing the tasks that I already learned”

Her early weeks reflect what payabl. aims to give every intern: a team that's approachable from day one, and real, actionable work to learn from rather than observing from the sidelines.
